Russia is on the verge of qualifying for the Fed Cup semifinals, leading China 2-0 after Elena Dementieva and Svetlana Kuznetsova won Saturday's singles matches.
Kuznetsova beat Yan Zi 6-2, 6-4 before Dementieva defeated Zhang Shuai 6-3, 6-0 on a hard court at Olympic indoor stadium.
China, which was swept 5-0 by Russia in their only previous meeting, in Beijing in 2002, is missing its top players and has only three available for the best-of-five series.
